Rick Richey’s Independent Spot
1 East 28th Street, 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10010
I recently had the opportunity to visit Rick Richeys newly opened Independent Training Spot on East 28th Street just off Fifth Avenue, in the part of town fashionably known as NOMAD. A brand new gym is always fun to check out, but I must admit that I thought this place was really cool. And the friendliness with which Rick welcomes people to the space only adds to the gyms terrific character.
Housed on the second floor The Spot features a long floor through space that offers a large open area that is perfect for sprints, pulling sleds, using ropes or just stretching. I found this particularly appealing as Ive come across few gyms in Manhattan that have enough space to do real sprints. The next most prominent feature is a large cage that offers endless options and numerous stations. It can be everything from a squat rack to a bench press in addition to supporting bags for boxing, TRX and even includes monkey bars. But thats only the beginning when it comes to the equipment offered here. Naturally youll find all the usual suspects free weights, kettlebells, dumbbells, cables, some cardio equipment, etc. But there are also aqua bags, pads for boxing and MMA, a Laddermill that reclines, and numerous wall stations for pull ups, ropes, etc. And with a limit of only eight clients at any one time its ensured that this equipment remains available. Its needless to say that The Spot has everything a trainer would need to keep clients engaged and progressing toward their goals.
Outside of the equipment on the fitness floor there is a space for physical therapy, changing rooms, a shower and a locker area. Towel service is also offered as is purified water.
Independent trainers are welcome to bring their clients in for a reasonable fee. And in an effort to encourage and facilitate trainers to grow their business Rick have been offering free workshops called “ITS for Trainers” which are free to all trainers interested in attending. These are held every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. It is recommended to call ahead. They already have about 20 educational events lined up for 2015.
Independent Training Spot has numerous offerings for the independent trainer whether its a unique space to train their clients or an opportunity to learn and grow as a professional. And Rick makes everyone feel welcome trainer and client alike. I hope I get the opportunity to visit again soon!
