Personal Trainers are Teachers as well as Trainers

Video Transcript
“Hi, I’m Glenn Dickstein, Founder of NeighborhoodTrainer.com here with another personal trainer tip.

There’s more to personal training than just the sixty minutes you spend with your client. But you probably already know that. But do you look at the other time you invest in your client’s well being as a teaching opportunity?

Send your clients articles, write blog posts that answer their questions and take a few minutes to explain something that you feel they should know more about.

When you teach your clients, you invest more in each other. Your expression of service and care along with their willingness to listen and learn from the information promotes a deeper and longer lasting trainer client relationship.

That’s all for today. Feel free to Like and leave your comments on this video. For more tips subscribe to the NeighborhoodTrainers YouTube Channel or email me at gd@neighborhoodtrainers.com for your copy of personal trainer and business marketing tips Volume 1.   Thanks for watching. Have a great day!”

Friends in Fitness

You’re motivated to keep working toward your goals, but are your friends in your corner?  Do they cheer you on, ignore you, or sabotage you by bringing junk food to work? Whether you’re trying to lose weight or bounce back from a serious injury, social support is an essential ingredient in fitness!  Here are some simple ways you can get your friends involved:

Plan a fun, healthy weekly activity with friends.  If you usually go to dinner with friends, try getting them to do something new with you, like taking a dance class or going for a walk in the park.  When you do go out to dinner with friends, choose healthier restaurants.  HappyCow and Clean Plates are two restaurant directories that are great places to start looking.

Share your boundaries.  Are you on a specific nutrition plan?  Let your friends and coworkers know what you can and can’t eat, and write it down.  Remind them that it’s OK for them to ask you several times.  It’s great to have a “cheat day” or ot her system to let yourself splurge occasionally, but your “cheat” foods should be things you truly enjoy and pick out yourself, not stale doughnuts brought in by coworkers.  People that truly care about you will respect your food choices.

Find one supporter.  While a personal trainer or fitness instructor can be a great addition to your support system, it’s really important to also find one friend or family member who is truly on your side.  Sharing your progress on social media is motivating for some people, but isn’t a substitute for a real human you can talk to about the ups and downs of your fitness journey.

Exploring NYC’s Personal Training Gyms: The Fitness Office

A Visit To The Fitness Office Personal Training

By Glenn Dickstein
On a picture perfect day, I made an impromptu visit to one of the  Upper East Side‘s best kept personal training gym secrets.  I made a quick call over to The Fitness Office, spoke to Vinnie Laspina and I was on my way. Tucked away in a residential apartment building is this two floor facility.

As I entered the building I was quickly reminded of one of my favorite lines from the 1996 movie Swingers.

“For some reason the cool bars in Hollywood have to be hard to find.  It’s kind of a speakeasy thing.  It’s kinda cool.  It’s like you’re in on some kind of secret.  You tell a chick you’ve been some place, it’s like bragging you know how to find it.”

Vinnie and his business partner, Joe Burt, started The Fitness Office about three years ago after working together for a three-year period as personal trainers.  They wanted to create a space where every trainer and client combination would feel welcome.  After getting reacquainted with the space, I concluded that they succeeded.

“We built this space purposefully to feel like you’re at home,” says co-founder Vinnie Laspina.  “It’s about what each client needs individually each and every session on that specific day. Each trainer has the opportunity to deliver just that to each of their clients every time. Everyone here is as social as they want to be without ever feeling the need to “be” anything but themselves. That’s when the results come….comfort + relationship with trainer + trainer skillset = results. That’s the formula we have and will use moving forward. Very simple.”

The Fitness Office space is advantageously unique.  The space was originally a two floor apartment fantastically turned into a personal training gym.  So, rather than having one open space, you have the benefit of three different indoor spaces, each with its own uses, plus an outdoor space (more on that later.)

While both lower areas can be used for personal training sessions, the main room is for some serious strength training.  The room is chock full of dumbbells, kettle bells, balls, and other “toys.”  The adjacent room is a bit more open, lending itself to small group training opportunities, as well as one-on-one sessions.  Trainers will be happy to know that the room is equipped with TRX for five so there is no need bring your own straps.  With all of this equipment, you’ll have some exhausted and strong students by the end of class.

Just out back, there is outdoor space.  Yes, I said outdoor space.  It’s the perfect space for a quiet warm up, cool down, or stretching session.  Maybe even a yoga or Pilates mat session being mindful not to disturb the neighbors.  Vinnie and Joe can tell you more about the outdoor possibilities.

But wait there is more!  Remember I mentioned a second floor.   Adding to the versatility of the space, upstairs has a massage table, some cardio to warm up on, and a kitchen.  The separation is an especially nice feature here so you can separate more intense activities from the less.

Both trainers and clients will not only appreciate The Fitness Office for its equipment, but also for its amenities.  The previously mentioned kitchen is open for use by trainers and clients.  It may be just storing your breakfast, lunch or dinner in the fridge or perhaps to make a post-workout shake.  BYO only.  On top of that, the facility boasts 3 full bathrooms, towels, toiletries, and private lockers.

Vinnie and Joe have designed an environment which takes away any excuse a client may give you.  No excuses about cold lunches and no place to shower when you work out at The Fitness Office.  Check and check!  They have also created an atmosphere where independent trainers can feel comfortable and build a thriving business.  I would recommend any Upper East Side personal trainer check out The Fitness Office for themselves.  It has a lot to offer and should meet the needs of many personal training clients.  Just call and ask for Vinnie or Joe before heading over.  They’ll be happy to talk to you.

Video: Personal Trainer Marketing Tip- Asking For Referrals

Hi, I’m Glenn Dickstein, Founder of NeighborhoodTrainer.com here with another personal trainer marketing tip.

The other day we talked about what to offer as referral bonuses. Today is the next step…asking for them.

91% of customers will refer you to friends if you just ask for the referrals… that’s it. Just ask.

“Do you have a friend who would benefit from training with me?”

“Would you like to bring a friend to an upcoming session?”

Listen for an opening in the conversation. If they mention their friends during training, smoothly slide one of those questions I just gave you into the conversation.

When people enjoy an experience, they want to share it and who better to do that with than friends.

Visits to Belleon Body, Lift Chelsea, and PPT Chelsea

Open Space Is At A Premium At Personal Training Gyms

Keeping up relationships in business is of the utmost importance.  Every week I make a point to stop in to see some of the owners and managers of New York City’s personal training gyms that welcome independent personal trainers.  While I don’t make a point to chronicle each of my visits, last week was particularly interesting to me.  While I was returning home, and reflecting on the morning, I began to think about the unexpected theme that I realized was running amongst the studios.

I hadn’t set out looking for any consistencies between the spaces.  Actually, what I admire most about New York City’s independent personal training gyms is the uniqueness and diversity of each space.  Diversity, that is as it relates to equipment, atmosphere and other offerings.

lift chelsea nycUsually my schedule is dictated by where I am parked or where my first appointment is going to be.  On this day, I was heading to 21st and 10th Avenue to visit a newly acquired space by the owners of Lift Gym.  The recently took over the space previously occupied by Culture.  I had the opportunity to meet Carol, who is managing the new location and overseeing the transition.  It’s a nice, open ground floor space.  It is well equipped with a few pampering features that visitors who want a little extra luxury will appreciate.

belleon body chelsea nycAfter I left Lift Chelsea, I headed over to see the renovations at the new Belleon Body.  This is Jeff Bell’s third gym during his storied career as a New York City personal trainer, along with veteran trainer Carlos Leon.  For this one, they are working with another accomplished trainer, Mark Greenfield.  I had visited when they had just opened in mid-2016.  Since then, they had finished the lower level for boxing training and other activities.  They also removed a wall that divided the main level into two separate training areas, opening it to now have one grand area.  The potential for personal trainers and their clients is enormous, was my initial thought.

IMG_4225Just a quick walk around the corner and I was at my final stop, Progressive Personal Training, to see owner James Camastra.  It had been several years and two renovations since I had seen James, so I was very much looking forward to this visit.  From the moment I walked in I could see it was different.  Even the entrance had moved.  James had expanded the facility hundreds of square feet adding lots of floor space.  James also noted, that he hadn’t bought a single additional piece of large equipment for the space.  It wasn’t the way things were going.  He had plenty of new items, just not the large heavy space-sucking type.  He was using the open floor space for many exercises and even painted a ladder on the floor for speed and agility drills.

As I was heading back to my car and reflecting on James’s comments and what I had seen at Belleon Body and Lift Chelsea, it hit me that all three gyms had this commonality in that they carved out a lot of open space with the purpose of keeping it empty to be used over and over in different capacities by personal trainers and their clients.  All of  It was so counter what you see in most gyms today. Many gyms are judged by how much equipment they have,  appear well equipped but not crowded and eliminating lines.  Therein lies one significant difference between a personal training gym and a membership driven gym.

Personal training gyms are such unique spaces.  The vast amounts of equipment that lines the walls and floors of their insides, can be used for multiple exercises and disciplines.  For gym owners to recognize this is such an advantage for personal trainers in New York City.  If you want to check out any of these places, give them a call and ask for the owners.  They are always happy to hear from personal trainers interested in their space.  If you want to see a full list of NYC personal training gyms, click here.
